Kitchen Cabinet Reveal – Painted Oak

Kitchen in Antique White

We’ve been doing lots of kitchen transformations here at Farm Fresh so I thought I’d share one of this summers kitchen transformations with you today.

These cabinets were solid oak and in great shape.  In fact they had so much shellac on them they were virtually indestructible!

See that shine!  It was no joke.

It took lots of sanding and cleaning to get them ready for paint.

For this kitchen we used General Finishes Antique White, (you can purchase it by clicking THIS LINK.)   Antique White provides the beautiful clean look of aged white with no yellowing.

Here’s a few before photos….

When we paint cabinets we try very hard to minimize the client’s mess and frustration.  Removing the doors and painting them back to my shop helps out a lot!  I use the HomeRight Finish Max paint sprayer.  It’s a great tool!  You can read more about it in THESE POSTS.

  1. Wow! That kitchen is stunning!! Are you sure you can’t come to Florida? Great job!

    1. Sally I’d love to come to Florida! Are you near the beach? 😊😍

  2. Beautiful transformation. Question though- when you paint cabinets antique white does the client then need to repaint their wall and window trim a white that matches the antique white of the cabinets? I.e. Do the whites clash?

    1. Hi Jen,

No repainting trim isn’t necessary. In fact I would recommend against that. White trim pops against the off white cabinets creating a simple contrast. It looks really beautiful on my opinion.

  3. Angela Compton says:

We have oak cabinets and are looking to refinish them. Did you put anything over them to cover the wood grain or did the sanding take the raised surface down? I don’t want them to look like they’ve just been painted over.

    1. Hi Angela,

I do sand them down and then paint. There can be some wood grain showing at times but I’m always happy with the outcome and haven’t had any complaints from my clients. Good luck with your painting job. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks,
      Beth

  4. What do you use for the top coat to protect it?

    1. Hi Breanne,

We use General Finishes “High Performance Top Coat”. It’s a very durable and easy to apply topcoat that comes in several different sheens.

      Thanks,
      Beth

  5. Do you have to put a sealer over the paint. Wondering how the paint holds up to daily wear and tear and cleaning.

    1. Hi Liisa,

Yes, we do use a sealer. General Finishes sells a few different topcoats called “High Performance Top Coat”. They are very durable and easy to apply.

      Thanks,
      Beth

  6. Hello!

This looks amazing! We are looking to do the exact thing! Would you recommend the High Performance Satin or Flat as the top coat? Also how many coats of each did you end up doing?

    1. Hi Nicole,

I recommend a minimum of 3 coats for the paint and 2 for the topcoat. It’s a lot of work but totally worth it in the end. Good luck on your project!!!!

      Thanks for reading,
      Beth

      1. Thank you so much Beth! I really hope they turn out! How much paint did you end up using for the above kitchen?

        Thanks again!

        1. Nicole,

It will depend on the color your using. I’d suggest 3-4 quarts minimum.

          🙂 Beth

  7. Hi Nicole,

Beautiful work. My question is did you use the sprayer only on the doors and brush paint the wall cabinets?

    Thanks, Lisa!

    1. Hi Lisa,

Yes, we roll or brush the skeletons and spray doors.

      Thank you,
      Beth

  8. I cleaned our oak cabinets with Crud Cutter and then painted the upper cabinets with Annie Sloan Pure White chalk paint. The tannins started coming through even on the one cabinet I painted with 3 coats. What would you suggest I use to stop the tannins showing? I’ve had numerous people give different opinions…Shellac, poly, Kiltz, zinssee Bin Primer. Some said I couldn’t paint over shellac and some said shellac & poly were the same and I could paint over them. I need your expertise of what product to use and how many coats before I waste time and money painting more. Also when I start the lower cabinets what should I do first after cleaning the cabinets? PLEASE HELP WITH ADVISE! I’m getting aggravated. Thanks in advance for your prompt reply! If you were in East Tn I would have you paint them! Thanks again!

    1. Hi Teresa,

Without seeing your cabinets I can’t give you an exact plan. However a standard recommendation would be to prime them with two coats of latex Kilz primer and then paint them with the paint of your choice. I hope this helps!

      Thanks for reading!

  9. What color are your walls in the pictures of the cabinets?

    1. Hi Dara,

This was a client kitchen so I’m sorry but I don’t know. Thank you for reading!
