Painting Laminate Furniture with DIY Chalk and Clay Paint

big painted desk

Most of you have a piece of laminate furniture in your homes.  You know the kind of furniture I’m talking about…..it’s heavy as all get-out and comes with super informative easy to assembly instructions.   And if you’re lucky enough to get to assemble it with your spouse it can create an afternoon of extreme fellowship like never before!

Today I wanted to show you how I transformed a set of laminate furniture with DIY Chalk and Clay Paint.

This transformation amazed even me!

And considering the amount of furniture I’ve painted over the years that’s hard to do.

Let’s take a look AT THIS LAMINATE PIECE!

Laminate Cabinet

My client purchased this desk from someone on Craigslist.  She needed a couple big sturdy pieces of furniture to fill her home office and didn’t want to pay a fortune for them.  And she is smart and wanted the previous owner to do all the assembly.

Plus, since she’s a believer in the power of paint she saw potential in them.

I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint to transform them.  The tops received a coat of  “Weathered Wood” Gray and the rest received a few coats of “Vintage Linen“.  I then followed all that up with our topcoat, Clear Patina.  Patina is my favorite…it gives you the look of wax without all the work.

Can you believe the transformation?!

I mean you would never know it’s not solid wood under the paint!

DIY Chalk and Clay Paint is super easy to use and bonds to almost anything without sanding or priming.   You can use it to transform furniture and accessories for a fraction of the cost of buying new furniture.

    so,
#1 the laminate bookcases I have do not need to first be sanded?
#2 is there a difference between chalk and clay paint? Or is it all in one?

    1. Hi Deborah,

For laminate I recommend lightly sanding off the sheen so the paint has something to grip to. However this is not required but I do like to do it. As far as the paint chalk and clay paint has a clay base with no acrylic or resin. This allows you to do so much more with it and helps it to bond to almost any surface.

      I hope this helps!
