Painting Thermofoil Cabinets with Annie Sloan Part 1

UPDATE~Since painting this kitchen I have decided that removing the thermofoil from the doors is much easier than painting over it.  While this kitchen is holding up well it’s just easier to remove it.  You can read all about how to remove thermofoil in this post.

You may remember reading about the kitchen I painted a couple weeks ago.  I have love working on kitchens.  So when I had another client contact me about painting her kitchen cabinets I was immediately excited to get started.

Here are a few before pictures.  As you can see I have some great things to work with.  The backsplash is great as is the countertop.  The appliances are going to be replaced with stainless too.  Now I know you guys are looking at this thinking…WHAT! she’s painting those beautiful white thermofoil cabinets!?  Well yes my friends, yes I am.  I’m using Annie Sloan in Graphite for this project but as long as you use a good primer for your first coat you could use just about any good paint.  In fact my friend Sonya over at At Home with the Barkers used Sherwin Williams to paint hers and they turned out fabulous.

Anyway back to the ranch I started this re-do by removing all of the doors and hardware.

I then had my wonderful little assistant help me tape off all of the insides of the shelves and anywhere else that my brush might accidentally make a stray mark inside the cabinets.

And then it’s time to paint.  Everything gets 3 coats of Annie Sloan Graphite.

As you can see here it’s really going to make a huge impact on this kitchen.

One thing I like to do for my clients is minimize the mess during this process.  I leave as much of the kitchen contents in the kitchen as I possibly can.  I left the drawers intact and just painted them where they were.  This is a little more work for me but it really helps the client not to have to take everything out of the drawers and find a place for it.

  1. What a difference the graphite is going to make. Beautiful work, Beth.

  2. These look awesome! I wish my cabinets were worth painting!! Can’t wait to see the final product.

  3. One of the pictures shows a two door cabinet next to the oven and another picture shows drawers next to the stove. Which is it??

    1. I’m not sure of your question. All of these pictures are from the same kitchen. 🙂

    2. Pat, the two pictures were of each side of the stove/oven. Bank of drawers to the right and doors to the left.

  4. Looking good, can’t wait to see the finished project!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

  5. I am a Realtor and I can tell you.. I don’t care what primer you use… This kitchen is going to be a nightmare. In order to really do this correctly. You MUST remove the foil wrapping. This can be done by heating with a blow dryer and scrapping/peeling the wrapping off. You will be left with high density fiber board. Trust me on this… Take off the foil wrapping then proceed with painting.

    1. Hi there and thanks so much for your comment. This kitchen actually turned out fabulous and is holding up really well. I have since started removing the thermofoil because it’s easier to work with.

      Thanks again,
      Beth

  6. Hi,

We are planning to removing the thermofoil from the cabinets in our house we just bought. One question I have is after you take off the doors and expose the cabinet skeleton is there thermofoil on that area as well. Sorry for the ignorant question but I do not have possession of the house yet.

    1. Hi Justin,

Typically the skeletons do not have thermofoil on them. In fact I’ve only had one instance where they did and it was on some trim and not the actual skeleton. You will need to clean them throughly and then I would suggest priming them with Zinsser Bullseye Primer. Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck!!!!

  7. Barb Schade says:

I am going to paint my kitchen cupboards.. what I don’t understand is the waxing and how you do it once they are all painted

    1. Hi Barb,

Wax can be applied with a brush very thinly, just like paint. Or it can be applied with a rag. Either way requires buffing after application. I use a product called Patina by DIY Paint instead of wax for cabinets.

      Thanks
      Beth
