Black Sideboard Turned Old Ochre Beauty

This client project is my new favorite.  It was beautiful in black but my client had moved into a new house and it just didn’t match like she wanted.

She wanted the top to be a natural wood with the rest painted in Old Ochre and a combination of clear and dark waxes.  Initially I was unsure if it was real wood or not.  Lately I’ve had pieces some in for refinishing that look like wood but are actually cast resin.

I decided the only way to figure it out was to put some stripper on it and see what happened.  I like to use Kutzit stripper.  You can read all about the process here.

I was so happy when the paint started to lift and there was wood, sweet wood underneath.  Sometimes it really pays to be wrong and this was one of those times.

It took LOTS of stripping and sanding and more stripping and sanding to get down to the raw birch wood.

I then created a mixture of mineral spirits, linseed oil (to condition the wood) and Minwax stain.

I applied it in very thin coats until I got the color I wanted.

Next came the painting.  Everything got two coats of Annie Sloan Old Ochre.  Can you believe this is only the second time I’ve used this color!?  It’s really pretty and went great with the stain I chose.

Now time for my favorite part… NOT!  Waxing oh waxing my least favorite thing to do but the only way to complete the look I want.  I have to admit I’ve gotten pretty good at waxing and it’s so rewarding when you step back and look at it.Nancy Sideboard 23

All of the painted surface got waxed with clear wax and then dark wax and then buffed.  In the end this piece is totally different.  I think all the details really pop now and I’m really pleased with how it all turned out.

  1. Beautiful!! I know it must have taken a lot of work to get the top stripped and to turn the black to white but the result is gorgeous!!

  2. What a pretty piece! Isn’t it amazing what you find underneath when you apply stripper?! I did a chair for a client who had painted the palm wood of the upholstered chair, and it was GORGEOUS when you get the “mistake” paint off! It gives me a new respect for the pretty wood underneath. Here’s that post if you want to have a peak. Great job!
