Annie Sloan Old White Painted Hutch
I’ve painted lots of hutches. In fact you can see one of my favorites, from just a few months ago here. So when a client contacted me about this hutch and expressed how much she loved it I was prepared for all the work it takes to complete a furniture painting job this big. She needed it to be updated because it was too dark for her house. We decided that painting it with Annie Sloan Old White was the perfect way to lighten it up. I was so pleased that it was already located in the perfect spot for painting…..a great big garage!!!!
I started by removing all of the hardware. My client wanted a clean, sleek look with no distressing so removing it to keep it crisp and clean was a must.
I also removed all the doors, shelves and the drawer. Then it was time to paint.
Although Old White has great coverage it took two and a half coats of paint to cover all the dark wood.
After all the paint was dry I used Annie Sloan Soft Wax to seal the piece.
And here you have it filled with my clients beautiful crystal and china.

Divine in old white Beth! The hutch is now the perfect place to display your client’s china. Nice job!
Thanks Therese!
This looks so beautiful! It is amazing what a paint will do – especially to a darker piece! Love it!
Thanks Megan!
Hi Beth, The hutch looks absolutely beautiful!! Amazing what you can do.
Thanks Sue!
It looks very nice! I love the look of furniture without distressing. I’ll do some pieces distressed, but others, I love to keep plainly painted. It just looks so much cleaner and more crisp. I’m sure your client was super happy with it! 🙂
Serena @ Thrift Diving
Thanks Serena. I like both too. I’m always happy to have clients with tastes different than mine because it challenges me and helps me stay creative. 🙂
It looks beautiful. After all of these years it still amazes me what a little paint can do. While at our favorite junk shop we found a similar piece to yours and made some edits. I’m very please with how it turned out.

I have a hutch similar to this one, i have been wanting to paint it. i was wondering how to go about prepping it before painting, sanding etc. thank you for your help
Annette,
It really depends on the paint you are planning to use. When I paint I rough up any shiny surfaces and then either use Zinsser primer and a latex paint or Annie Sloan Paint. I hope this helps!
Blessings,
Beth
I have a piece very close to this with a matching table. For years I have been wanting to paint it. I just get nervous when i think Im ready to start. Its beautiful wood but need to update the look. Just can’t decide what to do. Love what you did to this and its giving me inspiration. Thanks
Hi Karen,
Remember it’s just paint. If you mess it up you can always repaint it. A hutch is a big project to start. Maybe start by painting something smaller to get your feet wet? Even going to a thrift shop and grabbing something to practice on would work.
