Kitchen Cabinet Refacing on a Budget
If you’re considering updating your kitchen in 2015 then this post is for you!
I’ve realized through my client kitchen updates that sometimes paint is all you need. However with this kitchen that was NOT the case. With this kitchen, my client and I knew that the black hardware and doors had to go. But while I’ve painted LOTS of kitchens in my painting career, cabinet refacing is not on my list of talents. So when I was introduced to a fantastic woodworker, Chip (you can check out his Facebook page here) to complete this kitchen transformation I was thrilled!
This is what we started with. The doors, while solid, were pretty dated. The kitchen did have a great layout but just wasn’t my clients taste……
The sink, appliances and countertops had already been updated. So all that was left was to update the doors.
Chip built all new doors and then I used a combination of vintage white with a glazed edge to finish them off.
And this is what we ended up with. Beautifully painted vintage white cabinets with a touch of glazing on the edges.
This remodel came in a WELL under the average 10K plus dollars that most kitchen remodels start at and now my client has a fabulous new kitchen without the new price tag. I’d say that’s a win, win!

Great to see. I have a dark small 30’s kitchen and been tossing idea
of various whites for walls and cabinets. These colors are great.
What did you for cabinets and the pretty green on walls? Comfy and
cheery. Thank you, Nancy
I’m getting ready to take on this project myself. I notice that you said you added some glaze to the edges…I’m assuming you used glaze instead of dark wax. Did you add the glaze after you had already applied your clear wax? Also, did you put anything over the glaze after? Thank you, yours is gorgeous!
I didn’t use wax on these cabinets. I used chalk type paint with a polycrylic topcoat and then once that was dry I glazed the edges.

What type of glaze did you use?
I used a glaze from General Finishes. I can’t remember the exact name but if you visit their site you’ll see it. It might be Van Dyke Brown.
Thanks,
Beth
How did you do the glazed edges? With a brush?
Hi Kelsey,
I use a brush, a sponge and a rag. It’s a long process.

Can I put silver trim on my grey cabinets? I just painted the walls and I want to keep the grey but I want the cabinets to pop. I was thinking of just doing the top cabinets what do you think?
Hi Rhonda,
I’d have to see it to really know but you can most certainly use silver with grey. I always say it’s your home, make it what you love.
Happy painting!
Beth
Wow, you totally killed it on this project. Removing that black hardware makes a huge difference and really lightens up your space! My family recently decided to reface our kitchen cabinets and it really updated the look of our kitchen. I am envious of you DIY skills!
Thank you so much Sage.
