Painting our Master Bedroom Furniture with Annie Sloan Country Grey

If you’ve been here very long then you already know I love to use paint to update furniture and cabinetry. I’ve been painting furniture to spruce up my home and the homes of my clients for 25 years now. How can I be old enough for that to be true?!?! Every time I paint something I am still amazed at the difference.

We’ve had this bedroom furniture for awhile. I purchased it from someone on Craigslist for a great deal. It was the exact style I wanted. I had originally intended to paint it all white but it fit so perfectly in our master bedroom at our former farmhouse that I was able to leave it black.

Then we moved from the farm and downsized to the cottage farmhouse and it worked perfect again…

And now that we have moved yet again, more on that in another post, I decided to paint it to freshen it up to work in our barndominium master bedroom.

Getting Started

I knew I wanted to keep this furniture when we moved, because I still love it. In fact, I designed the floor plan of our barndo so I could fit all of this furniture in the master. However when I put it in the bedroom, I realized the black just wasn’t going to work against my blue wall.

I rarely have time to paint my own furniture. So it feels like a real accomplishment to get this done. I decided to use Annie Sloan Country Grey. It’s a very neutral color and goes with the bohemian vibe I plan on doing in the barndo.

Painting the first coat of paint on anything is always exciting and awful. I like to say “the first coat’s the worst coat” because it can really make you regret your decision to paint.

However once the second coat goes on things start to come together and you can catch your breath. Then it’s time to add clear wax for the topcoat and that’s when the magic happens!

Wax is my favorite way to seal painted pieces. Annie Sloan wax is smooth and buttery and gives a beautiful long lasting finish to your piece. Plus you can easily touch it up with a little more paint and wax if it gets scuffed or nicked.

And here it is! Our finished bedroom is so inviting and calm which is just want I wanted. I’m thrilled with how it all turned out.
