Royal Design Lovely Lace Stencil Chest
Todays post is far from my ordinary paint project. It’s actually a little out of the box for me. Can I let you guys in on a little secret? Before this project with a Royal Design Stencil I thought stencils were…..a little out of style. There I said it….in fact it’s been awhile since I even considered putting a stencil on something.
The last time I stenciled something it was during my “ivy phase”. You know what I’m talking about so don’t even try to deny it. We all went there or knew someone who did. Heck some of us are still closet ivy decor lovers. The last time I used a stencil it was on a nightstand that I bought at a yard sale BACK IN THE 90’S! I’ll never forget it. I painted it a pale gray and then stenciled a trail of ivy all across the top and down one side and the front and folks I thought I had really done something! It was gorge! I wish I still had it cause if I did I’d show it to you and you’d LURVE it too!
Anyhow when I was contacted to do a product review for Royal Design Stencils I was skeptical initially. But folks let me tell you….they have SO MANY beautiful stencils available on their site!!! It’s nuts! I had to ask Prince Charming to help me pick one out and even after his advice (he gives the best advice you know) I wasn’t sure I picked the right one. Well that is until I got it in the mail and was like…..”heck to the yeah! I picked the right one! This bad boy’s perfect!”
You see I had this chest that I got from my sweet friend Lane. She didn’t want to mess with it because it was in such disrepair so she asked me if I’d like to try my hand at it.
It was covered in layers of chipping paint where someone had attempted to strip it and already had the veneer removed from the drawers. I knew that it was going to need a LOT of help and that it would need a certain amount of detail added to the flat drawer fronts to really make them pop.
After I removed the remainder of the veneer and stripped and stained the top (more about that in another post) I painted the chest with Paris Grey and then Provence on top of that.
Next enter the beautiful stencil. I opened up this fantastic stencil, Lovely Lace Furniture Stencil and was ready to make some magic happen!
I tested out two sample creams on my sample board and decided on the lighter one, Pearl Oyster Stencil Creme. I even got this stencil brush! Awesome sauce! The brush you use to stencil is really important. You want it to have soft bristles and a flat head so you can smoosh the paint through the stencil.
Stenciling isn’t difficult. When loading your brush paint you want to make sure you have an even amount of paint on it before using it on the stencil. This can be done by blotting the paint off on a cloth or foam plate. Then just line up the little cutouts around the edge each time you move it.
At first I thought I’d stencil the entire front but then decided I’d start with the second drawer and work my way down.
The stencil cream gave the right bit of shimmer and this lacy pattern was just what this chest needed.
After that I did a little distressing and added some clear knobs because let’s face it, this piece is vintage all the way!
Overall I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out and I can’t wait to stencil something else in the future.
This chest is currently for sale priced at $195. Email farmfreshvintagefinds@gmail.com for purchasing details.

How cute, Beth! What a dog of a “before” though. LOL. These are the most satisfying projects, though, because you see what amazing looks you can get with just a little time and attention. And yes, stencils on furniture are awesome! If you change your mind 6 months from now and want a whole new look–nothing lost. 🙂 Everything gained. Great job!

This is just beautiful, Beth!! I love the romantic feel that the stencil gives this piece! And I remember the ivy phase all too well, only for me it was birdhouses. I stayed up till four in the morning one time stenciling birdhouses around the top of my kitchen walls!

Amazing, you sure turned and ugly duckling into a swan. Pinning!
It turned out beautifully. The dresser base is gorgeous with the grey and Provence. But adding the stencil really makes it pop. Gotta love Royal Design stencils.
That’s gorgeous! Love the stencil idea. And the color! That color is perfect.
I’m a little weary of stencils too but done properly I think they look great! Awesome job 🙂
I know this is supposed to be all about the stencil, but I’m in love with those clear knobs! Great choice. And looking at the “before” — wow, what a transformation!
Turned out beautiful. Such an nice feminine touch with the stencil. Reminds me of Rachel Ashwell’s shabby chic, maybe more chic than shabby.
This turned out so pretty! I love the tips and I love the little cut outs! That is always my challenge, aligning the stencil correctly. Love it, sharing on my FB page. Stop by! Would love for you to share at The Handmade Hangout Link Party tomorrow evening!
Thanks Karen! I’ll check it out!
