Updating Furniture with Chalk Type Paint
This summer has been filled with client projects.
I have been blessed with more work than I can do and I am so grateful.
This dresser came to me from a client I’ve worked with several times before. She drives an hour (one way) to bring me her furniture to transform and I’m so grateful that she trusts me with her treasures. You can see a buffet I transformed for her a few years ago here.
Todays dresser is for her daughters dorm room. She wanted a cottage feel with whites and greys, two of my favorites!
You can’t tell it too well in the above photo but this dresser is solid pine and had lots of knot holes that had bled through the current paint job and they were driving my client nuts. I primed them with Heirloom Traditions Ultra Guard Primer that I had tinted with some grey to prevent this from happening again.
Ultra Guard is a fantastic product that works on all types of furniture issues. In fact I recently used it to block out nicotine that was bleeding through a piece of furniture I was painting.
Once the base coat of primer had dried I started layering my paint.
Layering paint is something I do a lot. It’s a great option when you want a distressed look but don’t like the base color of the piece and would rather it not show through during distressing.
For the first layer I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint in Letterpress Grey.
Next up was Debi’s Design Diary Paint in Beadboard.
For this application I used a dry brushing technique.
Dry brushing is where you put very little paint on your brush and apply it randomly over a piece, not completely covering the layer underneath.
Once that was finished I covered the entire piece in my favorite topcoat….
Debi’s Design Diary Crystal Clear Patina
This product is so easy to apply and gives a finish very similar to wax without all the hard work and buffing. I actually wrote a post with a video all about it here.
I also painted these french provincial nightstands to match the dresser.
I love how even though they are a different style than the dresser,
painting them the same makes them so much more cohesive.
Thanks for visiting today!

All of these pieces turned out beautifully! Love your dry-brushing, it really adds character and a sense of history to the surfaces. Thanks for documenting the transformations!
Thank you Heather!
