Vintage Cupboard Makeover
I’ve been stuck in the house since Sunday. Over the last 5 days we’ve gotten various amounts of ice and snow and had temps in the negatives. Not my idea of a good time! I often say I wasn’t made for winter. I’m a warm weather girl, through and through. That said, being iced-in has caused me to think about all the projects I want to finish here at home.
So yesterday over on my Facebook page I posted this photo….
and asked my fans how I should give this cupboard a makeover. I explained that I had just finished painting my kitchen cabinets white and that I need to change this cupboard to complete the room. I then asked my {fantastic} fans whether they thought I should paint the inside of it turquoise or gray? And wow did I get a TON of opinions.
That’s one of the things I love most about my FB page. We have such fantastic conversations over there!!!! The majority of responses were for turquoise and I agreed and almost went that direction. BUT then I remembered this super fantastic contact paper that I bought at Big Lots and then I had an idea.
Why not go ahead and paint the outside of the cupboard white to match my kitchen cabinets and the inside gray with the contact paper on the back!!!! So that’s just what I did.
I used my favorite Heirloom Traditions Paint in A La Mode for the outside…..
and General Finishes Driftwood for the gray on the inside.
I’m so happy I got this project completed because it’s my month to host the IF:Gathering next week and some of my most favorite gal pals will be coming over for dinner. It’s nice to feel like I have things pulled together when I have people coming over in the near future.
It also forced me to “pretty up” the cupboard and put away all the not so pretty stuff I have been shoving in it instead of putting away.
I filled it with different things I’ve been given and collected over the years.
Like this cake plate.
It came from the grandmother of a client whose cabinets I painted. I was so touched when my client gave it to me that I almost broke down in tears. (So not professional.) I had mentioned early in the process of painting the cabinets how much I like it and how I’m sure it had displayed many cakes over the years (my clients grandmother is in her 90’s). When I came back to finish up on the cabinet job my client pulled it out and handed it to me. He told me his grandmother wanted me to have it because I liked it so much and she no longer used it. That my friends is another reason I love my job! Not because of the materialness of it but because I really connect with people and make friendships.
I also decided I’d display some of my milk glass in it. I found this at a garage sale years ago. I’ve used it all around the house and I’m glad it’s found a home here….at least for now.
I stuck some cloth napkins in this basket. I try to use cloth napkins instead of paper. I’d like to say it’s because I’m so environmentally conscious but if I’m really being honest it’s because I always forget to buy the paper ones when I’m grocery shopping.
So that’s my cupboard transformation. Stay tuned next week for my full kitchen makeover reveal.
See you soon.
