Vintage Table with Hand Painted Details

Hi friends, happy Monday to you!  Did you have a good weekend?  I’ve got a busy week ahead so I spent some time taking care of various household things.  I also got to meet with the builder about the house I’m helping design and do some shopping for that.  I’m getting excited and can’t wait to show you guys more about it.  It’s going to be GREAT!

But for today’s post I wanted to share a table with you that I painted for a client last summer.
Counrty Grey Table

I think I got more hate mail and negative comments on my Facebook page about this project than any other project I’ve done.  People were furious that I was going to “mess it up with paint”.  What I couldn’t understand is what people thought would’ve been the alternative?  As you’ll see in the following photos it was in desperate need of restoration.  Anyway I’ve grown a pretty tough skin over the last few years so I didn’t let it get me down.  Not only that, but just between me and you, I’m fairly certian we’re not taking “it” with us if you know what I mean, so I’ll continue to PAINT ON!  Shhhhh, maybe they don’t know yet.  Bless their hearts!  That’s what we say here in the south you know.

Ok this is what I started out with.

Table legs before

An adorable little table with lots of use and character.

Hand Painted Table Before

My client had purchased it at her church yard sale, if I remember correctly.  She loved it and it was the perfect size for her breakfast nook.

She even knew the elderly couple that had owned it and the piece had a great story behind it.

The reason this table needed paint.

It looked to me like someone had put one of those vinyl tablecloths on it and it had gotten wet and stuck to it and when they removed it they removed some of the paint too.  I just made that up but it sounds accurate, right?  Maybe I should quit blogging and become a detective.   What, you not feelin it?  Whatever, that’s what we’re gonna go with friends!

Ok back to the task at hand.  I was totally up for this challenge….I mean who doesn’t like to get their paintbrush out and do detail work?!  Plus my daughter is a detail painting extraordinaire and I knew she could help.

I sanded the piece down to knock off all the loose paint and smooth everything out.  Then I grabbed a can of Annie Sloan Country Grey and painted the entire table.  I was so thrilled that it was almost an exact color match!  Whoot!  Whoot!

I then took Annie Sloan Emperor’s Silk……is it just me or when someone mentions that color do you think of the book The Emperors New Clothes too, no?  Really I’m the only one?  Ok anyway I took said brilliant red color and painted it on the legs.

After that I sat the camera down and began the tedious but fun job of painting all the little flowers and leaves on.

My daughter was an INCREDIBLE help and I’m so grateful to have her talent and help when I’m in over my head tired and just need an extra pair of hands and eyes.

and here it is fitting perfectly in its new home with 2 Duck Egg and 2 Emperors Silk chairs.

So that’s how it turned out.  I think it’s even better than the original personally!  What about you?  Would you have restored it or left it like it was?

Can’t understand why people were upset about you painting this table. What in world were they thinking? It’s so fresh and wonderful now. Even just cleaning it wouldn’t have helped enuf. And it does look as tho somebody put a vinyl/flannel backed table cloth on it. Yuk. That was first thing I thought before I read what you said about it.
The detailed painting makes table into something special. catches the eye. I’d love to have that table. Looks great with the mixed chairs around it. Great save. Happy summer days

  4. I have a table and four chairs that I purchased several years ago. It is a cute little set with a beautiful oak finish and green leaves and I believe some black swirls too. The chairs have green leather seats too. My daughter has it at her house. It is a piece I would love to paint and reupholster but the finish is perfect. Maybe I will jazz it up a little by finding a nice print for the seats. Good job on your little table. Looks better than new.

It is just beautiful! It really bothers me that people would ever said mean things about anything that others do in regards to their furniture!! These blogs are wonderful and I hoped their would be one place that the meanings would just not visit!! Great job, and do what YOU love!! I bet you can’t tell that I love painted furniture, huh!!!

  6. I like it. If the client likes it, that’s all that matters.

  7. Beth, I didn’t realize it was my table that started the hate email… but the table was in such sad shape that painting it was the only thing that would have helped it. we talked about having you paint it as close to the original as you could and you did as far as I’m concerned. I get SO many compliments on it from people who saw the before in person and from those that never knew what it looked like. From what they told me it came over from Panama and after they didn’t have a need for it anymore it lived in their garage for YEARS so no wonder it looked so sad but it still had great bones. it had a great life then was moved out to pasture and now it has a 2nd lease on life thanks to your beautiful work! I was happy when you finished it and I am still happy with it! thank you again!
