Weathered Wood and Beadboard Painted Hutch
When friends contact me to work on pieces that are important to them it is such an honor. This piece is so special to my client because it was her moms.
The first thing I did was remove the top so I could stain it with a darker stain. I used a custom mix of several different stain colors I had on hand to get the perfect color.
The natural aged look of this piece is so wonderful and the dark stain really brought out the richness of it all. I decided to seal it with a clear wax topcoat.
Next I started painting a base coat on. I knew I wanted to layer the paint on this piece and distress it so I was pretty random with my application.
Once everything had a base coat of DIY Weathered Wood I dry brushed a layer of Beadboard. Dry brushing is very simple to do. Start by dipping your brush into the paint and then remove most of the paint on a cloth. Once you have very little paint on your brush apply it in quick random strokes onto your piece. I usually work my brush vertically and horizontally to create a more blended effect.
Then all that was left was a little distressing here and there and some DIY Clear Wax topcoat.
Painting this piece really blessed me. This client has always been so supportive of my business and vision and it makes what I do so very special.

WOW! You worked wonders with that piece and it is gorgeous! I love that it is so unique. Is that what they call a hoosier cabinet?
Hey Rose,
Yes I believe it’s a Hoosier cabinet. Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
Beth
It is sad it was painted. You need to know what has value and what doesn’t, and any antique value in this is worthless. It is a bakers table, with flour bin storage underneath….NOT a Hoosier cupboard….so sad…
Gosh, Lynda I really wish I had your advice before my client PAID me to transform HER cabinet that means so very much to her. One thing I often wonder about the few people who criticize my furniture painting, is if they realize that it’s just furniture and we can’t take it with us?!?! The memories we have that flood back when we look at pieces from loved ones aren’t about furniture “value” or stain and paint. They are about people, occasions, and events that shape our lives. Thank for your opinion Lynda but I have no regrets.
Have a good day!
Beth
I think it is gorgeous. I am one of those people that does not see or care what a piece is worth as far as being antique. If it reminds me of my Granny or Memaw or some other childhood memory, I want to enjoy that furniture in my own personal way.
Amen to that Shauna! Thank you dear!!!
🙂 Beth
I love what u did to the cabinet!!
Thank you Linda!
I have this same identical possum belly baker cabinet. I’ve been trying to research the value of it. I love it!
Thank you Jane!
