Farmhouse Laundry Room Reveal

Laundry Room RevealYou may remember my post about our farmhouse renovation.  Since I wrote about our house I’ve had several people ask to see more of it.  So today I decided I’d show you my favorite room in the house….the laundry room!

What?  That’s not your favorite room in your house?  No?  Really?  Think about it, if you didn’t have it you’d either be walking around in dirty clothes all the time…..or naked!  And let’s face it no one wants that.

My laundry room is right off the kitchen in my house and because I don’t think ahead, like to keep things interesting.

Laundry room door

And I put this fun red door with glass in it as my laundry room door.  Wasn’t that smart?  Now whenever I have company they can just look right down into my “ALWAYS clean” laundry room.  Hmmmm, maybe I need a curtain?

On the one hand I love the door and it helps me stay motivated to keep the laundry room clean.  On the other hand it requires that I have to keep the laundry room clean.

Let’s start at the beginning……this is how the room looked when we started.

Laundry Room During Consturction

It really wasn’t a laundry room at all but rather a porch.  But I had to have a place to do the laundry and this room made the most sense.  Now I know this is a dark ugly picture….(Southern Living isn’t going to be calling me anytime soon) but I want you to see it because I need you to understand where this laundry room started.  Poor, Prince Charming, he married a complete nut-job.  I mean who in their right mind looks at this room and thinks “wow this is going to make a beautiful place for me to clean everyones clothes?!”  Ummmm, you guessed it…THIS GIRL!

Fast forward lots of months, construction, tears and dollars later and we’re here….

Laundry Room Before

Isn’t it amazing what a little electricity, plumbing, flooring, drywall and paint can do!  Ahhh now we’re getting somewhere.    We had to hang the cabinets on the sides of the walls instead of right above the washer and dryer because I was determined to have a window in this room as well.  And as you can see they wouldn’t have fit on either side of it.  Hey, you do what you gotta do.

Now for the fun part…..  Living in a house built in 1827 has its challenges and storage is one of them.  When we set out on this adventure I knew I’d have to make my own storage.  I also wanted it to be “pretty”.  Isn’t Prince Charming good for putting up with me.  Don’t answer that.  LURVE him!  He agreed to build some bins for laundry baskets and a bench for storage and actually looking back I think it was his idea to add the bead board to the walls.

Once the bead board was up he built the bench….

and then the cubbies…

and then finished it all off with trim…

Then we added this cute little display shelf.Laundry room 3And some snazzy hooks for hanging.

And here we are.  A room I’m happy to spend time in and show off!

Didn’t Prince Charming do a fantastic job!!!!  I’m grateful he’s so handy and patient with me and all my ideas.

Thanks for reading!  I’ll see ya next time.

No curtain on that door, please! I have the same thing, but, frosting on the glass works wonders.

Hi Beth! Love your blog and I just wanted to say, Hey Jack – you stole my idea, LOL…3 years ago we had just finished remodeling our whole house and bought a new washer and dryer from a home improvement place but when they installed the washer they overtightened the gasket and unbeknownst to us, for the next six months every time we did laundry, it sprayed out a fine mist of water against the wall connecting our kitchen laundry area and the office. Long story short, my beautiful remodeled home had to be gutted after finding black mold under all the floors and in the inner walls of the living area. As we were rebuilding (and grieving, in my case) I broached the subject of closing of our porch which was a dead air space anyway and the builder said, ‘hmmmmmm, well your porch has a bit of a slope to the floor…’ and I replied, “perfect, now we’ll never have another leak that results in a catastrophic house fail, it will drain away from the house next time!!” It not only added square feet and storage for our first ever laundry room but we have a large pantry in place of the old one in the kitchen, complete with vintage doors on both. Someone’s blog somewhere in internetworld stored a memory in my brain so that when just the right set of circumstances came along, we rocked it!

    1. Whoot!!! Whoot Michelle!!! Nothing like a catastrophe to kick some renovations into high gear! Glad it all worked out!
