Vanity Refinished with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite

Graphite Vanity

Next to painting furniture, repairing it is one of my favorite things.  Keeping something from being taken to the landfill is great motivation for me and makes me feel like slowly but surely I’m making a difference.  This vanity is a great example of “a diamond in the rough”.

I can’t say for sure what happened to it but the top looked as though someone had taken the claw end of their hammer and beat it.  It just was not a pretty sight.  So when my client asked me if I could sand the top to make it a little smoother I knew it would take more than sanding to get it smooth.

Enter the hubs.  His suggestion, and a great one I might add, was to just replace the top with a new one.  So that’s exactly what we did.  We cut a piece of thin finished plywood that we had and then glued it right onto the existing piece.

After that we secured it with my handy dandy Ryobi brad nailer.  I can’t tell you how great this tool is.  We use it ALL THE TIME!

After the new top was in place we added the mirror supports back.  Yes, that’s our basset hound, Barkley….he’s always trying to “help”.

Next we filled the holes and sanded everything down.  We were going to router the edges but after sanding them a bit we got the feel and look we wanted.  Then it was time for paint.  I used ASCP in Graphite and then sealed with dark wax.   I almost always use dark wax when I use Graphite.  It really makes the color so much richer.

As you can see all our hard work really paid off.  The new top looks fabulous and is as smooth as can be.  My client was super happy to have this piece back for her sweet daughters room.
